What to Consider When Creating Page Layout and Composition
1. Align Each Element of the Design on The Grid System
Place any text or graphic element on the page so that they have a visual connection to each other. You can use the horizontal or vertical alignment, aligning objects along the same edge or center. Regular and consistent layout is very important because our eyes and brains crave some regularity and consistency.
2. Select Single Visual or Create Strong Visual Connection
One of the simplest layout and perhaps most powerful is the use of a strong visual. However, if using multiple images, have them connected through alignment and proximity - grouping images so that they form a single visual unit and align them in the same way.
3. Balance the Visual Layout/Text
It is important to create the right balance, both on the amount of text and graphic elements and how they are arranged on the page. Asymmetrical layout tends to create a more dynamic layout. Feel free to use asymmetric or odd columns for visual and text. Symmetrical balance or even the use of elements such as two or four columns or blocks of 4 images generally produce a formal layout that is more static.
4. Rule of thirds
Associated with balance, one-third rule indicates that the composition would be better if the arrangement of text and graphics can be placed using one of the following guidelines:
- The most important element is given a little more space or less evenly in a third vertical or horizontal.
- The most important elements are concentrated in the top third or bottom of the page.
- The most important element is centered on one of the points where the lines intersect on the division of the page is divided into three sections horizontally and vertically.
5. Adding White Space in the Right Place
The empty space is as important as the text and images on the page. It can damage the composition if you cram too many elements on the page even when it is in harmony and balance, and are using the rule of thirds. Your layout needs space to breathe. The best place to apply it is in the margin, the edge of the text, or graphic elements; thus not stuck in the middle of the page but adding paragraphs, lines, and letterspacing can also serve to increase the white space.
6. Use Two or More of the Same Design Elements
If one is good, then two is better. Sometimes, repetition can come from the use of consistent forms of alignment, using the same color for related items (such as a quote or headline), using the same style or size of graphics, or simply put the page number in the same place throughout the publication.
7. Emphasize Differences Between Each Design Elements
It is better to use aspects of the composition of pages with the same elements - the same alignment, consistent use of color - but it's good to use a few different things, including the use of contrasting elements of color and harmony. The greater the difference the greater the contrast and a more effective layout. A simple example of using the emphasis on headlines from the type and size of the different text or use a different size or a different text color for captions, quotes, and page numbers.
